Frequently Asked Questions

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your first class starts so that we can get some paperwork sorted and start the fun on time.

What do I wear?

Above the knee shorts and a t-shirt or sports singlet are best when attending a Scoundrelles pole class. This will ensure maximum skin contact with the pole and give you grip to perform fabulous pole tricks.
It is also important to remove hand jewellery and avoid moisturising before coming to class.

Why can't I moisturise?

It is for your safety and the safety of your classmates that we ask you not to moisturise before coming to class. Moisturisers leave a slippery residue on the pole and can make tricks quite dangerous and much more difficult.

Who will be there?

When you arrive you will meet your friendly and supportive instructor, she will introduce you to the other women in the class. There is a maximum of 10 per class so you get the attention that is required when learning pole dance. It is difficult to describe the people who attend pole class because there are a number of reasons women enjoy learning pole. Everyone does it for the enjoyment some also do it to feel sexy and empowered, others for a great workout.

Do I need to be fit or athletic to try pole dancing?

The Scoundrelles pole course has been developed for women of all fitness levels and abilities. Each class will help you develop the fitness and skills to go onto the next level.

Are there any risks involved?

As with any form of activity there is some risk involved. You will probably find some bruises after class, and perhaps the occasional pole burn, metal can be quite unforgiving. These fade quickly and become less frequent as your strength and skill develop. Slipping can occur if you become sweaty or have sweaty hands, your instructor will help you with advice if sweaty hands are a problem.

What happens in class?

A Scoundrelles class always begins with a warm-up. We aim to keep these warm-ups fun and interesting mixing in different dance and fitness styles for variety. After strength training the tricks or choreography class begins and we finish with a stretching routine developed to increase flexibility.

What is Burlesque?

Burlesque is a risqué performance style that rails against conventional structures and ideals. It is satirical with a saucy edge. Traditionally the genre encompasses a variety of acts, comedy, dance, singing, mime and strip tease.

Burlesque has been around since the 1840's and has evolved dramatically since its beginnings as a parody of the social classes.

New burlesque or neo-burlesque tends to try to shock the audience and takes on many forms. It includes acts based on the earlier conventions of strip tease, cabaret, comedy and elaborate costumes.

Do I need to bring my Pasties? And What on Earth is a Pasty anyway?

The Pasty conserves some sense of modesty for the burlesque performer; it is a patch of clothing that covers the nipple and usually decorated with tassels or sequins.

You can leave yours at home; you won't be required to remove your outer garments in class.

What if I miss a class?

Scoundrelles will make up a missed class only if you have given 24hrs notice that you can’t make the class, otherwise the class is forfeited.

Where is class held?

Class is held upstairs at the Fringe bar in the Indigo Room.  If the bar is closed you will find one of the Scoundrelles team ready to let you in.
